Purpose
Griha Pravesh is the ritual done before moving into a new home. It’s meant to purify the space, invite positive energy, and seek blessings from the gods for peace, prosperity, and protection.
Auspicious Timing (Muhurat)
Usually chosen by a pandit based on:
- The owner’s birth chart (nakshatra)
- Panchang (Hindu calendar)
- Avoid: Rahu Kaal, Amavasya (new moon), Tuesdays
Common favorable months: Magh, Phalgun, Vaishakh, Jyeshtha (Feb–June)

Basic Setup
- Kalash (copper/silver pot)
- Coconut (1 or more)
- Mango leaves (5 or 11)

For Kalash Sthapana
- Fill Kalash with Ganga Jal
- Place mango leaves around the mouth
- Coconut wrapped with red cloth on top
- Tie Moli around it
- Keep rice grains and coin inside
Pooja Steps (Typical Flow)
- Kalash Sthapana: Install the holy pot at the northeast corner.
- Ganesh Pooja: Invoke Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles.
- Navagraha Pooja: Worship nine planetary deities for harmony.
- Vaastu Pooja: Seek forgiveness from Vaastu Purush for any structural imbalances.
- Havan (Fire Ritual): Purifies the home and surroundings.
- Purna Aahuti: Final offerings with ghee and samagri.
- Sprinkling holy water in all rooms.
- Aarti and Prasad distribution.
- Enter the home with the right foot first, carrying coconut or Kalash.
Traditionally done before
- Bringing in furniture or sleeping in the house.
- House should be cleaned and decorated with rangoli and toran (mango leaves & marigold).
Extra Touches
- Light diya at Tulsi plant (if you have one)
- Invite close family/friends
- Prepare sattvik food (no onion/garlic)
- Offer Prasad to all
